Salisbury Post: County gets higher grade for making online info more accessible

From the Salisbury Post (3/13/12): After some tutoring in transparency, Rowan County has raised its grade for online resources from a C to an A.

The John Locke Foundation scores governments in North Carolina on the amount of public information they make available online.

On Monday, Rowan became one of just seven counties acing the foundation’s test.

Rowan County’s website, www.co.rowan.nc.us, now includes a “transparency” link in its “related links” menu on the left. Clicking on it leads to a page of links to different resources and records.

“It really hit us that we had information (on the website) that people couldn’t find,” said David Boling, director of the county’s information systems department. “This makes it easy for people to go to it and know that it’s available.”

Until the start of 2011, the John Locke Foundation had given Rowan a “C” grade. At the county’s planning session on Feb. 29, Commissioner Jim Sides said that wasn’t good enough.
