Seven Elon athletics programs recognized for academic excellence

Phoenix athletes and coaches in seven sports won recognition this spring from the NCAA for their Academic Progress Rate scores.

The Elon University men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s tennis, women’s cross country, women’s golf and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams are among the NCAA Division I teams receiving public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores, the NCAA announced in May.

The 1,049 teams publicly recognized for high achievement represent 631 women’s teams and 418 men’s or mixed squads.

At Elon, teams were coached by Chris Dockrill (women’s golf), Christine Engel (men’s and women’s cross country), Mark Elliston (women’s indoor and outdoor track and field), Michael Leonard (men’s tennis) and Matt Matheny (men’s basketball).

“We are very proud of the academic and athletic accomplishments our student-athletes continually achieve year after year,” said Director of Athletics Dave Blank. “This achievement demonstrates the commitment Elon student-athletes, coaches and administration consistently have towards strong academic performance. It is very exciting to see seven of our teams receive this hard-earned special distinction for academics.”

Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-2012 and 2012-13 academic years.

These awards are given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their APRs.

Full APRs for all teams, including access to postseason play and penalties for low-performing teams, will be released May 14.
