Shannon Sullivan, “I Love Myself When I Am… What? The Costs of White Privilege, White Habits and White Ignorance”

Sullivan, chair and professor of philosophy at University of North Carolina Charlotte, explores the nature of white privilege, its instantiation on the bodies, habits and the epistemologies of white people, and its costs for whites and peoples of color. Her work is penetrating and deeply unsettling, asking us to face up to the problems both of white domination and of common attempts to avoid it, including those by “good white people,” showing how, among other things, white guilt and shame can distance white people from the real problems of their own privilege.
