Elon Law: Making a difference

For the ninth consecutive year, Elon Law’s entering class volunteered across Greensboro as part of orientation week. On Aug. 8, members of the 2015 entering class prepared meals for disabled veterans, supported a nonprofit homeless services organization, developed a clothing pantry for children in need, enhanced a local playground and assisted in construction of affordable housing.

“It was really wonderful giving back to the community and the people we will actually work with as lawyers,” said Victoria Prince, who volunteered at the nonprofit Backpack Beginnings. “Being able to get out and get a taste for the real world was extraordinary. Not only did we get to learn more about our community, but our classmates as well.”

“It was good to get to know an organization that we may work for if we do pro bono work or if ever we are appointed to represent clients who are unable to afford legal representation,” said Joshua Ritter, who volunteered at the Interactive Resource Center, a homeless services organization.

“I enjoyed getting to know my classmates and also giving back to the community at the same time,” said Marie Booth, who volunteered at Hester Park. “It was a team building experience and an opportunity to get out into the community.”

The ninth annual Elon Law Reaches Out day of community service matched entering students with the following organizations and projects:

Backpack Beginnings provides children in need with nutritious food, comfort items or basic necessities through the use of backpacks and other means, serving over 3,000 children annually. Elon Law students assisted in the organization of a clothing pantry.

Community Housing Solutions a nonprofit organization formed for the purpose of assisting low and moderate income families to obtain and maintain safe, decent and affordable housing. Elon Law students helped to build a deck and a ramp at one of the houses.

At Hester Park, part of the parks system of the City of Greensboro, Elon Law students spread mulch to enhance the playground area.

The Interactive Resource Center assists people who are homeless, recently homeless or facing homelessness. Elon Law students painted rooms, rearranged furniture and assisted in the organization of personal care kits for clients of the center.

The Servant House provides housing and supportive services to homeless and disabled veterans. Elon Law students prepared, cooked and served a cookout lunch for the residents of the house.
