Elon’s Department of Accounting hosts Continuing Professional Education Seminar

The seminar offered CPAs continuing professional education credits in taxes, regulatory ethics, accounting, management advisory services, communications and economics.

One hundred and twenty-five certified public accountants from business, industry, public accounting, not-for-profits, government and academia organizations attended the Elon University Department of Accounting’s 17th annual Continuing Professional Education seminar on Nov. 13.

Speakers from profession, government and academia provided updates on several issues pertinent to CPAs. Plenary sessions equipped participants with the ability to identify new developments in federal, state and local tax, utilize tips to improve their communication skills, improve their understanding of North Carolina’s ethics requirements for CPAs, discuss case studies in managerial accounting and access information that will help them better advise their employers, clients and associates.

The CPE seminar included the following sessions:

  • State and Local Tax Update – Presented by Keith Wood
  • Professional Issues Update from the State Board Perspective – Presented by Robert Brooks, executive director, North Carolina State Board of Certified Public Examiners, and David Nance, Deputy Director, North Carolina State Board of Certified Public Examiners
  • Federal Tax Update – Presented by Addison Maille, tax partner/member, Smith Leonard
  • Case Studies in Managerial Accounting – Presented by Scott Williams, partner, Gilliam Coble and Moser
  • Professional Ethics and Conduct – Presented by Bryan Starnes, CFO, Meridian Senior Living
  • Improving Communication Skills for Accountants – Presented by Cindy Conn, assistant professor, Elon University
  • Economic Update – Presented by Mark Kurt, associate professor, Elon University
