The value of public views on judicial system's fairness and impartiality

Elon Law Dean Luke Bierman, a member of the N.C. Commission on the Administration of Law and Justice, says new polling results can inform efforts led by the state’s Chief Justice to strengthen North Carolina’s judicial system.

An Elon University Poll recently surveyed North Carolina residents on a series of questions that were suggested by the North Carolina Commission on the Administration of Law and Justice, an independent commission convened earlier this year by Chief Justice Mark Martin of the Supreme Court of North Carolina. Results from the Elon Poll available here indicate that North Carolina is divided on questions of fairness in the courts.

“Chief Justice Martin should be commended for his leadership in bringing together a broadly diverse group charged with working to ensure that the administration of law and justice in North Carolina meets our aspirations for justice and equality,” said Elon Law Dean Luke Bierman. “I commend the Commission for soliciting the views of North Carolinians about the state’s judicial system in order to inform our work of ensuring fairness under the rule of law throughout our state.”
