Death of professor emeritus James 'Jim' T. Toney

The James T. Toney Endowment Fund in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business had been established in his honor by members of the Department of Economics; Toney died March 6, 2016.

James “Jim” Thomas Toney, a member of the Elon economics faculty for three decades before his retirement in 1991, died at home on Sunday, March 6, 2016.

The Burlington resident started working at Elon on Sept. 1, 1960, and retired on May 18, 1991. The James T. Toney Endowment Fund in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business had been established in his honor by members of the Department of Economics. The annual scholarship supports off-campus travel for economics majors.

Toney is survived by his wife, Nancy H. Toney, his brother-in-law, Bob Howell (June), and his daughters, Suellen McCauley (Vince) and Nancy Wilkinson (Chance), as well as several cousins in and around his native home in Union and Columbia, South Carolina.

Toney was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of the VFW of Gibsonville, a founding member of the Olde Forest Racquet Club, and also served as a volunteer coach with Willie Williamson to introduce tennis to middle school students, beginning with Broadview Middle School.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Rich and Thompson Funeral Services at 306 Glenwood Avenue, Burlington, North Carolina. Visitation will immediately follow the funeral service.
