Elon Law professor's work to be featured in ABA magazine

An article authored last year by an Elon Law faculty member will be featured in an upcoming “best of” edition of GPSolo, a magazine of the American Bar Association’s General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division.

“Cultural Diplomacy and Border Disputes” by Antonette Barilla examines how cultural and legal advocacy often spell the difference between suffering and success by minority populations that seek a land to call their own in border disputes around the globe.

Barilla’s article was first published in 2015 by the ABA’s International Law News. From the article:

“In communities where social and cultural disputes are intense, our ability to be advocates of justice is paramount in the hope for change. Without a champion, grievances and objections are easily cast aside as the grumblings of the ‘lazy’ or ‘uneducated’ or ‘undeserving.’ Without promoters of fair and evenhanded treatment, change will be sluggish at best. And while progress has been made, in large part as a result of thoughtful and strategic endeavors such as the ABA Rule of Law Initiative, there is room for continued growth.”

Barilla is an alumnus of The Hague Academy of International Law, a center for research and teaching in public and private international law that provides opportunities for contact with the International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, international criminal courts and other institutions.

As a part of her law practice prior to entering academia, Barilla worked in a private firm specializing in general civil law, estate planning, contract law, and trust/corporate administration, immigration, education and juvenile law.

She has developed and taught related courses including Introduction to Legal Methods, Legal Methods, and Advanced Legal Methods. She has also taught Introduction to International Law, Introduction to International Treaties, and International Business Transactions.

Barilla obtained her law degree with honors from Western State College of Law, where she also received the Academy of Appellate Lawyers Award for brief writing. During her last year at Western State College of Law, she worked in Heidelberg, Germany, for the Army Judge Advocate General.
