Death of Trustee Emerita Janie Crumpton Evans Reece

Elon Trustee Emerita Janie Crumpton Evans Reece died Oct. 21, 2016, at Edgewood Place in Burlington, N.C. She was 89 years old.

Reece served as an Elon trustee from 1995 to 1999 and was elected trustee emerita in 2000. She previously served as an Elon faculty member in mathematics from 1966 until her retirement in 1987. In 1996, she and her husband established the Janie Crumpton Evans Reece and E. Kemp Reece Endowed Mathematics Scholarship to support upper division math majors from North Carolina. She also contributed annual gifts to Elon’s greatest needs, supported the W. Clifton Elder Scholarship and the Phoenix Club, and was a member of the Order of the Oak, Elon’s planned giving recognition society.

Reece was born in Roxboro, NC to Raney Earl and Pearl Carver Crumpton, both deceased. She was educated in Roxboro schools and at UNCG where she received AB and M. Ed. Degrees. She was married to William James Evans, a Burlington native, from 1948 until his death in 1974. In 1982 she married E. Kemp Reece of Greensboro and they resided in Greensboro until 2003 when they moved to The Village at Brookwood.

Reece had much pride in being a member of the NC Century Farms. Membership is composed of those who own farms that have had continuous family ownership for over 100 years. Her family claims over 150 years of continuous family ownership. 

In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was predeceased by a sister, Elva Crumpton Oakes, a brother, Robert Earl Crumpton, and a step-son, Kemp Reece, Junior. She is survived by a son, William James Evans and wife Carol of Fredericksburg, Va., son David Crumpton Evans and wife Mary of Burlington, and daughter, Elizabeth Evans Queally and husband Frank of Darien, CT. She is also survived by step-daughter, Anne Reece Collins and husband James of Winston-Salem, and step-daughter-in-law Jan Reece of Raleigh. She was a happy grandmother to six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Her sister, Rose Crumpton Boyd of Kenly, also survives her.

A memorial service will be held at Front Street United Methodist Church, Burlington, NC at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6. There will be a visitation from 1 – 2 p.m. in the Heritage Center at the church prior to the service. Burial will be private. Memorials may be made to the Janie Crumpton Evans Reece Scholarship Fund of Elon University, 2600 Campus Box, Elon, NC 27244, or to a favorite charity.
