A recent report by WFMY News 2 about the premium increases that customers of Affordable Care Act health insurance policies will be facing included insights from Steve DeLoach, professor of economics at Elon University.

Premiums of policies purchased through the ACA’s HealtCare.gov health insurance marketplace are expected to be 25 percent higher for 2017, with DeLoach saying the increases are due in part to fewer young people signing up than expected, which has insurance costs greatly outweighing premium revenues.

“When anything is new, it’s difficult for them to forecast exactly who is going to sign up so it’s hard for them to predict the risks,” said DeLoach.
