Wall Street Journal, Business Insider cite Elon Poll in latest election coverage

National news organizations The Wall Street Journal and Business Insider cited results from the Elon University Poll during the fall election season in their coverage of how the presidential race is playing out in North Carolina. 

In an Oct. 29 article titled “Trump, Clinton vie for North Carolina with much different ground games,” reporters Colleen McCain Nelson and Janet Hook with the Wall Street Journal turned to the results from the Elon Poll released Oct. 4 that showed Democrat Hillary Clinton with a 6-point lead over Republican Donald Trump with a little more than a month to go before Election Day.

The Oct. 30 article by Business Insider’s Sonam Sheth titled “Trump has convinced Republican men they’re playing a ‘zero-sum’ game” digs into the results of the Oct. 4 Elon University Poll that found that men and whites supported HB2, the controversial “bathroom bill” in North Carolina, more than women and blacks in the state. 

“There’s no reason to believe that transgender people’s bathroom use is hurting people who are not transgender. But the over-generalization of zero-sum discrimination leads people — particularly heterosexual white men — to believe that it’s hurting them in some way even when it’s not,” Dan Cassino, an associate professor of political science at Fairleigh Dickinson University, told the news outlet for the article.
