Career planning advice for seniors from the SPDC

The Student Professional Development Center offers great career planning tips, suggestions, and resources with seniors.

It’s your senior year; only one semester left! You’ve been working hard and looking forward to this break—to seeing your family, catching up on some sleep, some Netflix binge-watching…and to the food! But face it. It’s going to happen. Whether at the dinner table, in the car, or over coffee one morning, they will ask the question you’ve been dreading. It is your senior year, you know. Here it comes…..

“So… what are you doing about getting a job?”

It doesn’t have to be like that. We want you to get a job, too! In that spirit, we offer below some suggestions for things you should do when you return for the spring semester, as well as a preview of a few things to come in the Student Professional Development Center. Our advice starts here:

Get your resume and your LinkedIn profile ready.

We offer free LinkedIn profile photos in the SPDC. And resume reviews are easy to schedule! You can call to make an appointment or stop by during drop-in hours at the SPDC main office in Moseley (every day between 2:00-4:00), or at any of the satellite offices in McEwen, KOBC, or the Station at Mill Point. For satellite office hours, visit our website.

Start paying attention to the Elon Job Network.

Do you know that every year we have almost 2,000 job and internship opportunities posted? Yes! Jobs on EJN are all over the country, and while some of them target specific majors, most are open to all majors. When an employer posts a job on EJN, it means they are interested in Elon students. And that could mean you, but only if you apply!

Set up a job search on EJN.

An automatic email can be sent to you each time a new job in your interest area is posted. Do this, and you won’t miss an opportunity.

Start checking the “Interviews” tab on EJN.

Find out which employers will be interviewing on campus in the upcoming weeks. Our interview rooms are located in Moseley and offer a private, professional space not only for face-to-face interviews, but also for students who may have a phone or Skype interview scheduled with an employer. And don’t forget, the SPDC offers mock interviews and one-on-one advising sessions to make sure that you are as prepared as possible.

Thinking graduate school instead? Or a year of service?

We can help you with this as well. We have advisors on staff who can guide you through the graduate school application process or help you select a meaningful partner organization, location, project, and more.

Come to the Job Expo!

Put this date on your calendar: March 2, 2017. That’s the date of our Spring Job Expo. Employers will be there, ready to meet you and talk with you about opportunities within their organizations. Other scheduled events this spring: Sales Meet & Greet – February 28 (all majors are invited); Peace Corps Panel Discussion- March 2; Teacher Fair  March 16 (education majors).

Make an appointment with a career advisor in the SPDC.

When you return to Elon, we’ll be here, available to help you in any way we can. Our goal is to help you leave Elon with not just a diploma, but with a job as well. Come see us soon!

Okay, get back to your break. You earned it. But rest easy–now you have a plan.
