School of Education faculty and students present at state mathematics conference

The North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference is held each year in Greensboro, N.C.

Three Elon School of Education faculty members, one undergraduate student, and an alumna presented their research at the 2019 Annual North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) Fall Conference held Nov. 7-8. Elon students in the elementary and secondary mathematics methods courses also attended. The NCCTM Fall Conference occurs annually in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Assistant Professor Katie Baker and Associate Professor Scott Morrison presented with current middle grades education major Rylie Torretti in a session titled “Numbers and Nature: Exploring Math Outside.” The session was designed for K-12 practitioners and included hands-on mathematics explorations with natural materials.

Baker also gave a second presentation entitled “A Lesson Plan Is Not Lesson Planning.” This presentation was a collaboration with local elementary school practitioners about lesson preparation and implementation that centers student thinking.

Lecturer Erin Hone and alumna Molly Kearns ‘19 presented part of Molly’s Lumen project focusing on mathematical representations in elementary classrooms. Their presentation was entitled “The Missing Link: Connecting Representations.”
