Sheridan examines COVID-19’s impact on economy for Times-News

Assistant Professor of Economics Brandon Sheridan discussed the economic uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic with the Burlington Times-News.

In a time where the U.S. unemployment rate is reaching record highs, Burlington, North Carolina, daily newspaper The Times-News has turned to Assistant Professor of Economics Brandon Sheridan for insight into the economic uncertainty surrounding the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The article, “Virus uncertainty makes for economic uncertainty,” discusses April unemployment data that showed another drastic increase in unemployment. Sheridan discussed the data and how the pandemic could impact the economy and job market in the coming months.

“How long it stays elevated depends on how bad the next [coronavirus] wave is,” Sheridan told the Times-News. “If it’s anything like the first wave was, we could be back in the same situation in the next few months.”

Sheridan also discussed the impact that government response and the public’s willingness to adhere to stay-at-home measures could have on the nation’s economic outlook.
