Husser featured in pair of WFMY stories focused on 2020 election

Jason Husser, associate professor of political science and policy studies and director of the Elon University Poll, discussed a variety of election-related issues in two recent stories by local broadcast news station WFMY.

Local broadcast news station WFMY tapped Associate Professor of Political Science and Policy Studies Jason Husser for a pair of recent stories about issues related to the 2020 presidential election.

Husser, who is director of the Elon University Poll, was featured in the outlet’s Aug. 18 story on election polling, titled “You can still trust polls after 2016, here’s why.” The piece focused on polls that predicted Hillary Clinton as the winner of the 2016 election and how some pollsters missed the mark. For his part, Husser talked about how voters should view polls ahead of the 2020 election.

“The late-breaking voters are going to be an issue in trying to decide who’s up and who’s down,” Husser said. “This is my rule of thumb: unless a person has a lead the last poll before the election of more than five points, I treat it as it’s really too close to call.”

In WFMY’s  “FACT CHECK: Is Harris more liberal than Warren & Sanders,” published on Aug. 19, Husser discussed claims by the Trump campaign that Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris is the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate.

Husser offered context for the claims and discussed whether they were factual.

“My personal impression is that she is liberal, but she’s not nearly the level of liberal that you would see wanting massive government intervention in both the social and economic sphere,” Husser said.
