Provost Aswani Volety named UNC-Wilmington chancellor

After three years at Elon, Volety returns to UNCW where he previously served as dean of arts & sciences.

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors has announced the election of Elon University Provost Aswani K. Volety as the seventh chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Volety served as UNC-Wilmington’s dean of the College of Arts and Sciences before joining Elon in September 2019 and will succeed retiring Chancellor Jose “Zito” Sartarelli. He will conclude his service as Elon’s provost on June 30, 2022.

“I want to express my congratulations to Dr. Volety on his new position, and to thank him for his leadership at Elon,” said President Connie Ledoux Book. “Over the past three years, Aswani has advanced academic quality, continued Elon’s development as a top-100 national university and provided steady guidance throughout the challenges of the pandemic. We are grateful for his work at Elon and happy he will continue to serve nearby at a fellow North Carolina and Colonial Athletic Association institution.”

To support the continuity of academic leadership over the search period for the new provost, Book has asked Dean Raghu Tadepalli of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business to serve as interim provost, and Senior Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs Tim Peeples to serve as interim vice president for academic affairs. Dean Tadepalli and Dr. Peeples are both proven and effective leaders and this division of duties will allow them to continue to serve in their current positions while in their interim roles.

A search committee to identify Elon’s next provost will form in the near future, co-chaired by Associate Professor of Political Science and Academic Council Chair Jason Husser and Vice President for Finance and Administration Janet Williams.
