Inside Higher Education highlights Fellows Experience course in School of Communications

Through the course, nearly three dozen Communications Fellows visited media outlets and communications organizations during a 10-day program in Florida during Winter Term.

What are the elements that make up an effective career exploration trip? Inside Higher Ed recently answered that question with a new article highlighting how universities including Elon are providing career insights to students through immersive experiences.

The article by Inside Higher Ed reporter Ashley Mowreader, “Career Prep Trip: Organize a Career Trek,” examines how effective career treks combine professional development, connections with employers and workplace tours to provide students with a deep dive into potential careers. Career treks can also go beyond just those elements to include service opportunities as well as opportunities for students to bond with each other, with the article pointing a spotlight on the Fellows Experience course in Elon’s School of Communications.

This Winter Term, 34 Communications Fellows participated in the 10-day course during which they visited media outlets and communications organizations. But the experience also included a visit to the Pulse Night Club Memorial in Orlando and volunteering at the Heart of Florida United Way Office, where the fellows made no-sew blankets, sorted and organized boxes and cleaned a shed. Their time in Florida also included visits to Clearwater Beach and the Disney parks.
