Careers and Graduate School in Political Science and International Studies: Life After Elon

This talk should be beneficial to all students, regardless of major, if they are looking for how to best prepare themselves for graduate school and/or careers post Elon. The speaker will be Heidi Hobbs, the director of the MA in International Studies program at NC State.

Dr. Heidi H. Hobbs is currently the Director of the Master of International Studies Program and Associate Professor of Political Science in the School of Public and International Affairs at North Carolina State University. She has previously served on the faculties of Florida International University and Illinois State University. Professor Hobbs has a B.A. (Magna Cum Laude) and M.A. in Political Science from the University of Georgia, as well as a graduate Certificate in Global Policy Studies from UGA. Her Ph.D. is in International Relations from the University of Southern California.

Her books include City Hall Goes Abroad: The Foreign Policy of Local Politics from Sage, 1994 and Pondering Postinternationalism: A Paradigm for the 21st Century, from SUNY Press, 2000. She has also authored other articles, contributed book chapters to other publications and made numerous presentations. Her most recent article is entitled, “The Challenge for Women in International Studies,” in the journal, International Studies Perspectives.

Professor Hobbs is a leader in her professional associations. She is the Past President of the Foreign Policy Analysis section of the International Studies Association, representing over 600 faculty internationally, as well as the Past President of the International Studies Association Southern region, representing over 400 faculty across the South. She is also the Past Chair of the Foreign Policy section of the American Political Science Association, representing over 300 faculty. She has also served as Chair of the Women’s Caucus of the International Studies Association and is currently a member of the Professional Development Committee and the Committee on the Status of Women of that organization.

She is a recognized authority in her field, having been a political science reviewer for the National Science Foundation, and a regular reviewer for several academic journals and publishing houses.
While Professor Hobbs most recent experience has been in academia, her career has included an internship with the Office of the Mayor, Atlanta, Georgia, serving under the Honorable Mayor Andrew Young. She has also worked as an Information Officer in the Georgia State Legislature.
She is currently completing a textbook with Harry I. Chernotsky and Darin Van Tassel entitled, Crossing Borders: International Studies for the 21st Century, forthcoming from CQ Press.
