Fifteen rising high school seniors from Alamance-Burlington School System will begin the yearlong Freedom Scholars program this summer with a range of activities focused on the study of democracy and civic engagement.

This is a second generous endowment gift from Elon Trustee Louis DeJoy and his wife Dr. Aldona Woś of Greensboro, North Carolina, to assist students with high financial need from Title I schools in Guilford County.

The year-long program will foster civic engagement, reflect on ideals of democracy and freedom, and increase college access for Alamance County high school seniors. It is funded by a $300,000 grant from the Teagle Foundation.

This fall Elon’s “It Takes a Village Project” was able to work with 11 of the 12 Title I elementary schools in the Alamance-Burlington School System thanks to a grant from the Oak Foundation.

The National First-Generation College Celebration was held on Nov. 8 at LaRose Student Commons with several events to honor Elon's first-generation students.

This overview details accomplishments and future work toward 46 recommendations detailed by the Latinx/Hispanic Working Group, which issued its final report in 2018.

Vice President for Access and Success Jean Rattigan-Rohr will become a special assistant to the president on June 1, 2022, and will focus on the significant expansion of the “It Takes a Village” Project.

A modified two-week program offered these Alamance-Burlington School System high school students the opportunity to participate in academic seminars, gain insights into the college application process and offer each other support.

The Odyssey Scholarship Program offers opportunities for students like Jewel Tillman ’21 to become leaders on campus and after graduation. Growing the number of scholarships to produce graduates the world needs is the top priority of the Elon LEADS campaign.

Elon’s renowned program for struggling young readers has received new Oak Foundation funding to serve more children over the next five years.
