When searching for internships, college students are often taught the importance of cultivating personal contacts and maintaining communication with potential employers. It's sound advice because it works.

Ross Wade, assistant director of Career Services for the School of Communications, along with three career development colleagues from UNC Chapel Hill, Duke University and UNC Pembroke planned and facilitated a one day conference on the use of social media tools in career development practice.

Brittany Cadwallader was bummed. It seemed like her odds of landing her coveted internship were long ones. She stood about a 13 percent chance of getting an interview and about a 3 percent chance of securing the internship.
