More than 1,700 of Elon's newest students were surrounded by friends and family Under the Oaks as faculty, staff and students celebrated the formal start of the academic year.

Faculty members were recognized on Aug. 20 for excellence in mentoring, service and leadership, teaching and scholarship. 

Planning Week marks the start of the academic year and provides an opportunity for faculty receiving funding from the Faculty Research and Development Committee to present their work.  

A grant from the Alamance Community Foundation has been awarded to the Department of Human Service Studies to support the work of senior course.

Elon President Connie Ledoux Book presented the medallion to two retired faculty members and two steadfast supporters of the university during an event marking the start of a new academic year. The university also recognized four named professorships during the event. 

The annual summer news update panel discussion will be held Aug. 29 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in McKinnon Hall.
