Service opportunities, gatherings and other special programs at Elon this week will commemorate the legacy of the late civil rights leader. 

As part of their research study, Frances Ward-Johnson, Alexa Darby and Tammy Cobb found that nearly 90 percent of community organizations considered their respective partnerships with Elon University to be worthwhile and meaningful.

In a partnership with Elon's community partner Crossroads and with the support of an Elon's Kermode Center Community Partnership Initiative grant, a Human Service Studies Department professor and her students presented a film series on sexual assault, child abuse, and human trafficking in the United States, as part of an ongoing community outreach program addressing these critical global issues locally.

The statewide coalition of colleges and universities also recognized an Elon student with its Community Impact Award for leadership and service. 

Cody Marshall, sophomore musical theather major, created the partnership through the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement to match his gifts and community needs.

A recent study by Elon economics students has found that Sustainable Alamance, a community initiative helps local residents attain self-sufficiency, has had a $3 million local impact during the past five years.

The 2016 Sustainable Campus Index is a publication of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education and highlights innovative and high-impact initiatives from 124 colleges and universities that submitted a STARS report.

The annual conference, which is a scholarly venue to disseminate new knowledge on service-learning and community engagement, was held Sept. 26-28 in New Orleans.
