Elon University students, faculty and staff traveled for a week in late March to assist communities with service work while learning about social issues that impact communities both in the United States and abroad.

A panel of experts heard from community members and students Tuesday night as ideas were shared for more effectively serving those confronting food insecurity and hunger in Alamance County.

Nicole "Niki" Molinaro, a political science and international studies double major from Wading River, New York, was honored by the national organization for her commitment to civic engagement and social responsibility.

Elon services and programs in downtown Burlington, N.C., have boosted the local economy over the past three years by an estimated $8.1 million, earning an award this month from the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Leaders of a student organization that fights hunger in Alamance County invited Elon President Leo M. Lambert and his wife, Laurie, to prepare meals with them this month as they celebrated a $5,000 grant to expand their impact across the region.

The Alternative Breaks Program in the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement offered the late January experience to introduce students to issues around hunger and homelessness in the nation’s capital.

The donation program intended to give back to student groups and university initiatives has assisted Stop Hunger Now, Habitat for Humanity, Kernodle Center programming, the "It Gets Better" initiative and the Elon Academy.
