Sarah Holdren '18 is participating in the Harvard University School of Public Health's Multidiscipinary International Research Training program in Ethiopia.

Nosipho Shangase '17, who graduated from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, has become an accomplished public health scholar at Elon and will pursue her doctorate in the field. 

The four graduating seniors participated in a signing ceremony in Clohan Theatre to formalize their participation in the service-learning program. The four fellows who have completed their year of service were also recognized.  

The newest class of Peace Corps members will dedicate more than two years to serving communities around the globe. The students were recognized with a reception in the Student Professional Development Center on Tuesday. 

The move comes as Elon has expanded its offerings in the discipline since the launch of a public health studies minor more than a decade ago. 

Josephine Gardner, a public health studies major from Maine, has received the Samuel Huntington Public Service Award to grow a nonprofit she founded to empower low-income women in Ethiopia. 

A public health studies major explores how pregnant women approach the decision about whether to have a waterbirth. 

The university's top award comes with $15,000 to support and celebrate academic and creative achievements.

Johanna Krygsman '17, a public health senior, will be the 6th Elon Postgraduate Fellow at CRHP India. She will spend one year supporting and learning from the coprehensive development nonprofit - the Comprehensive Rural Health Project - in Jamkhed India. 

Professors Raj Ghoshal and Katherine Johnson facilitated a student discussion of Peter Singer's "The Life You Can Save: Doing Your Part to End World Poverty," as the inaugural Read On Elon event.
