Elon has modified the normal calendar for fall semester 2020. The goal is to reduce travel to and from campus and avoid bringing large crowds for major events, lowering the chance of exposing the campus community to outside sources of viral infection.

Residence Hall Move-in

Elon expanded first-year student move-in to two days, reducing congestion and supporting physical distancing in residence halls. First-year students learned on July 1 their assigned move-in appointment times for Aug.14-15. Returning students were assigned move-in times during Aug.17-18.

Fall Semester (undergraduate)

Faculty/Staff Planning Week sessions were held Aug. 12, 13 and 17. Fall semester undergraduate classes began on August 19.

Fall Break

Traditional Fall Break consists of two days: Oct. 7 and Nov. 3 (Election Day). Classes will not be held on those two days, but the university will remain open. See the staff holiday schedule for 2020.

Family Weekend & Homecoming

The traditional Family Weekend and Homecoming & Reunion Weekend have been reimagined virtually as Family Fall and Homecoming & Reunion Week. Family Fall will take place from Sept. 21 to Oct. 31 and Homecoming events will be celebrated Oct. 12-18.

End of Semester & Exams

In-person instruction will end prior to Thanksgiving, with the last class day on Monday, Nov. 23, and Tuesday, Nov. 24, serving as Reading Day. Final exam period begins remotely on Monday, Nov. 30 and semester ends Friday, Dec. 4.

Winter Term & Spring Semester

Winter Term’s schedule will slightly change, with undergraduate classes beginning Wednesday, Jan. 6, and concluding with exams on Wednesday, Jan. 27. The undergraduate spring semester will start as scheduled on Monday, Feb. 1, and will conclude as planned with exams held May 12-18 and Commencement scheduled for Friday, May 21.

Plans are being developed for a May Term (aka a warmer Winter Term), if conditions allow. Students who had previously planned to study abroad in January may be able to enroll in an international study experience at the end of May and into early June. An announcement about this term will be made by late-September.
