All students, (undergraduate and graduate) will be required to receive a flu vaccine and provide documentation prior to Dec. 31, 2020. Students should receive their flu vaccine as soon as they are able to get the most protection. Students who do not comply with this requirement will not be allowed to resume in-person classes on campus in January until they have received a flu vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends  a seasonal flu vaccine for  everyone who is medically able to receive  one. It is possible to be infected with the flu and COVID-19 at the same time, although it’s too soon to tell how common such co-infections will be and how having both may affect health. Medical experts warn that medical and hospital resources may be overwhelmed this flu season if we do not reduce prevalence of the flu. You can read more information about the CDC’s guidance here.

Receiving Your Vaccine

Students should receive their flu vaccine as soon as possible but before Dec. 31, 2020. Campus Recreation and Wellness and The Office of the Dean of Students will offer a series of on campus opportunities to receive flu vaccines this fall. A list of those opportunities may be found at Fall 2020 On Campus Flu Clinics. The list will be updated as new opportunities become available. Elon will cover all out of pocket costs and document compliance with the flu vaccine requirement for students who receive their vaccine at one of these on campus clinics.

Students may also receive a flu vaccine off campus at almost any pharmacy. Most flu vaccines are covered by insurance and there are no out of pocket costs. Students will be responsible for out of pocket costs of receiving flu vaccines at off campus pharmacies. Students who receive their flu vaccine off campus will be required to upload documentation. Students should upload documentation of their flu vaccine on their Phoenix Health Portal.

Medical and Religious Exemptions

Consistent with approved exemptions for North Carolina immunization requirements, Elon University will allow exemptions to the required flu vaccine for one or both of the following reasons: medical or religious. Those students requesting a medical or religious based exemption to the flu vaccine requirement must sign a statement of responsibility for their health and safety. All requests for exemptions to the 2020 fall required flu vaccine must be submitted via the Flu Vaccine Waiver Form  on or before Oct. 31, 2020.
