Maroon and gold were adopted as the Elon colors circa 1910, and various shades of those colors have been used throughout the history of the university. Today, the primary maroon color is Pantone 188 and the gold is Pantone 872 (metallic ink) or Pantone 7503 (non-metallic).

Accurate reproduction of the Elon colors depends on the medium and/or software programs being used. It is essential to choose the right file type and color systems for print publications, digital screen displays or other applications.

Primary Colors

Both of these colors should be present in all Elon University branded materials, except in scenarios where color matching is not possible, such as black and white printing. Maroon should always be the most dominant color of the two. There are both metallic and non-metallic PMS colors for the gold. Metallic PMS gold should only be used in scenarios where spot metallic inks can be used in the final output.

Typography

Elon’s marks are created using the Bembo typeface, a revival of a classic serif old-style typeface originally cut by Francesco Griffo in Italy circa 1495 for use in a book authored by Cardinal Bembo. Use of this typeface for headings and body type strengthens the university’s visual brand. A good option for headers, footnotes and sidebar body text is Myriad Pro, a sans-serif typeface that complements Bembo’s shape and weight. Since both Bembo and Myriad Pro must be purchased, other standard fonts that are available with installed software can be substituted. Look for fonts that complement Bembo and Myriad Pro. Highly stylized fonts are usually not the preferred choice for design.

Bembo

This is the classic serif typeface used in our signatures and wordmarks. It can also be used for headings and subheads, but is usually reserved for the most formal communications.

Color, Type and Accessibility

The chart below outlines type and background color combinations that meet a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text (meets AA requirements for accessibility). A number of free contrast checkers are available online to help you check color accessibility beyond Elon’s brand colors, such as the WebAIM Contrast Checker or Adobe Color Contrast Analyzer. This guidance is essential in digital applications and a good rule of thumb for print.
