Chad Awtrey gives invited research talk

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Chad Awtrey gave an invited research talk at UNC-Greensboro on June 30, 2015.

Awtrey delivered an hour-long colloquium titled "Symmetries of Polynomial Roots: Undergraduate Research in Abstract Algebra" to a crowd of mathematics students and faculty. The talk was part of UNCG's summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation and led by UNCG Professor of Mathematics Jan Rychtar.

Awtrey gave a broad overview of his research program, which focuses on developing theory and computational techniques for studying the symmetry properties of roots of polynomial equations that have arithmetically interesting coefficients.

In collaboration with his Elon undergraduate researchers, Awtrey has made important contributions to this area of mathematics, including new algorithms, more efficient methods, and complete classifications in many cases where the polynomials' coefficients are p-adic numbers.
