Carmen Monico invited to collaborate in PhD program development in Guatemala
The Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, a private, liberal arts university in Guatemala, invited Elon faculty Carmen Monico to join other internationally recognized faculty in supporting the development of a PhD program in applied psychology.
Assistant Professor Carmen Monico of the Department of Human Service Studies was invited to collaborate in the education of the first cohort of Guatemalan students undertaking a PhD program in applied psychology.
The UVG is a private, not-for-profit, secular university in Guatemala, established in 1966 and now one of the most prestigious academic institutions in that Central America country. The UVG, which requires students to graduate with English proficiency, has become a preferred institution of higher education in Guatemala due to its liberal arts education, excellence in teaching and involvement in international research. Monico has been serving as a reviewer in the Ethics Committee of UVG’s s College of Social Sciences.
UVG offers undergraduate and master degree programs in various academic areas, including engineering, education, science and humanities, and social sciences. The PhD program in Applied Psychology, which is the first doctoral-level program that UVG offers, is anchored on the scientist practitioner model of education. This approach emphasizes science, practice and teaching as core values. The program is applied because students are encouraged to address contemporary social concerns in order to offer solutions.
As per UVG’s official invitation, Monico is expected to teach an advanced course on qualitative research in the summer 2016. She will be joining faculty from UVG’s College of Social Sciences, as well as faculty from the University of Minnesota, Michigan State University, University of Utah, University of Iowa, University of California Santa Barbara, The Chicago School or Professional Psychology, Chicago School of Professional Psychology, University of Northern Colorado, Gallaudet University, Villanova University, Saint Louis University, Universidad Nacional de Santiago de Chile, Universidad de Antioquia (Colombia), Universidad de Puerto Rico, and Fundación Aiglé de Argentina.
