Academic Advising is a way of teaching. The preparation and skills that are necessary for excellence in classroom teaching are equally important in an advising session. Meeting one-on-one with a student to discuss goals, majors, careers, and course selection may be more challenging for an advisor because the security of an academic discipline is missing.
