Academic Standing Policies

There are several levels of academic standing for students in academic difficulty. Students who don’t meet minimum academic requirements are placed on Academic Probation, Continued Academic Probation, Academic Suspension, or Dismissal. Complete definitions of these terms can be found in the academic catalog.

If you have been placed on probation or have been suspended, you will likely have questions. Below are some frequently asked questions with information and guidelines to help you navigate a successful academic recovery.

Academic Probation FAQs

I was notified that I am on academic probation. What does this mean for me?

Academic probation is a designation that your academic performance has not been satisfactory for supporting degree progression and completion. Being placed on academic probation was obviously not in your plans when you came to Elon. However, this is now an opportunity for you to reflect on what has gone well, what hasn’t gone as planned, and what you want to do differently to put yourself on better academic footing.

As you look ahead to the next semester, you may want to consider making a concrete plan for using the many supports and resources that are available to all Elon students. If you’d like to speak with someone about your plan, Learning Assistance staff are available to meet with you.

Now is the time to familiarize yourself with the academic standards that must be achieved so that you can continue at Elon, as outlined in the academic catalog.

What can I do to improve my academic standing if I am on academic probation?

There are many steps that you can take to improve your academic standing. Here are some suggestions that have been helpful to other students on academic probation:

  • meet with instructors regularly to assess how you’re performing in classes and to ask for clarity on course content.
  • meet with your academic advisor (or an advisor in the Office of Academic Advising) to discuss the upcoming semester, and to discuss the possibility of retaking courses you have failed so that you can improve your cumulative GPA.
  • utilize academic supports on campus, such as Learning Assistance and the Writing Center.
  • work with staff in Disabilities Resources to ensure that any necessary accommodations are in place.
  • Utilize resources for mental health and personal well-being (Counseling Services, Timely CareHealthEU).
  • check email and Moodle regularly and respond to messages/requests in a timely manner.

What GPA do I need to ensure that I can continue at Elon?

You will need to earn a semester GPA greater than 2.0 in each semester until your cumulative GPA exceeds 2.0. This requirement is in place to ensure that you are making progress toward your degree.

What happens if I don't earn a semester GPA greater than 2.0 while on academic probation?

If this happens, you will be suspended for a semester. Please see the Academic Suspension FAQs for more information.

Continued Academic Probation FAQs

I am on continued academic probation. What does this mean for me?

This means that while you met the probation requirements for your semester (greater than a 2.0 semester GPA) your cumulative GPA remains below 2.0.

How is continued academic probation different from academic probation?

Continued academic probation is a middle point between academic probation and being back in good academic standing. The good news is that you have met the requirements of your academic probation (earning above a 2.0 semester GPA). However, there is still work to be done and you will remain on continued academic probation until your cumulative GPA meets or exceeds 2.0.

When will I be cleared of academic probation?

You will be in good academic standing and off of probation once your cumulative GPA reaches or exceeds 2.0.

Academic Suspension FAQs

I have been suspended for poor academic performance. What does this mean for me?

If you have been suspended, please read your suspension letter carefully. This letter outlines the procedures and deadlines for appealing your suspension for a semester of continued probation. You are allowed to appeal a suspension once. If you choose to appeal, be sure to submit your appeal before the deadline.

If you choose not to appeal or if your appeal is denied, you will need to sit out for one semester (either fall or spring). This is an opportunity to reflect on your past academic performance and to plan for future success.

For information on re-enrolling following your suspension, please visit this page.

Once you have been approved to re-enroll, familiarize yourself with the academic standards that you will need to meet so that you can move forward, as outlined in the academic catalog. It may be helpful to create a concrete plan for using the many supports and resources that are available to all Elon students. Learning Assistance staff are available to meet with you to discuss your recovery plan.

What can I do while I'm away from Elon to prepare for a successful return?

We sincerely hope that you will re-enroll at Elon and we’re committed to helping you succeed when you return. We also believe that you can make strides while you’re away so that you are in a better position to succeed when back on campus.

You might choose to take courses at an institution near your home, which can help you gain academic skills and confidence. Many students who have taken courses while away have also benefitted from working with an academic coach who can share new strategies for learning and growing as a student.

If you plan to take courses elsewhere, take a look at the transfer equivalencies page and submit the transfer request form before enrolling to secure pre-approval.

Other students choose to work while they are away so that they can maintain a healthy schedule that balances work and free time.

Regardless of what you choose to do while away, we hope that you will take time to reflect seriously on how you can continue developing personally and academically.
