Welcome to the Elon Department of Economics

Elon faculty know that, when it comes to studying economics, students must do more than memorize theories and concepts. They also must be critical thinkers, keen analysts and astute problem-solvers. Economists must have the skills to understand changing conditions, what drives institutional change and how consumer behavior will change over time.

The hallmark of the Elon economics program undeniably is our passion for research. Faculty engage students in their research by bringing it into the classroom as well as the lab. Economics majors also are required to engage in undergraduate research by writing an original thesis during their senior year. Many of these papers eventually are presented at regional or national conferences. Economics students also serve as editors and referees for the premier undergraduate research journal in economics, Issues in Political Economy.

An economics degree provides an excellent foundation for a variety of professions. Recent Elon economics graduates have pursued careers as financial analysts, research economists, entrepreneurs, lawyers, insurance underwriters, consultants and sales associates, as well as careers in government service. Economics alumni also have pursued graduate study in economics, urban and regional development, law, accounting, finance, management, public policy and international studies.
