The Elon Academy staff believes it is important to connect the scholars to meaningful experiences in professional environments. To create such experiences for scholars, the Elon Academy established the Elon Academy Business Partner Program in 2008. The Assistant Director of Scholar Support serves as the Coordinator of this program.
As a pioneer in genomic testing and the commercialization of new diagnostic technologies, LabCorp is one of the world's largest clinical laboratories, with annual revenues of $5.7 billion in 2012. Headquartered in Burlington, North Carolina, LabCorp tests more than 370,000 specimens daily for over 220,000 clients nationwide.
LabCorp provides paid summer internships for Elon Academy scholars. Scholars are placed in the following LabCorp departments: Billing, Warehouse, Public Affairs, Law Department, IT Support, Community Affairs, Sales/Marketing, and Human Resources. Scholars have a wide range of opportunities during their internships including writing for the company newsletter, participating in community outreach events, rebuilding computers, and attending staff meetings. Student interns are selected from current Elon Academy scholars and are provided with four hours of professional development prior to their first day of interning. During their four-week internship, students are evaluated by supervisors. Oftentimes, scholars have the opportunity to continue to work during the academic year during days off from school or after school.
