W-1. New Faculty (full-time) Session with H.R. (8:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.)

Location: Isabella Cannon Room, Center for the Arts

Representatives from the Office of Human Resources will begin benefits orientation for all new full-time faculty members. Benefit enrollment forms will be given and discussed at this time. New faculty members who have not submitted the required documents (social security card, driver’s license, deposit slip, voided check, etc.) or have not completed the new hire paperwork packet should bring the aforementioned documents to this meeting. Your passport will satisfy the I-9 form; however, the social security card is needed for payroll purposes.
NOTE: Previous Elon adjuncts who are now changing to full-time faculty status should also attend this session.

W-5  Stocking Your Toolbox:  Developing Partnerships with Disabilities Services and with Students to Ensure Disability Access  (9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.)

Location: Lindner 102

This presentation will first provide a brief overview of the University’s legal obligations to provide curricular, programmatic, and physical access to students with disabilities.  We will explore Elon’s population of students with disabilities to become familiar with our students and their needs.  Then, we will outline faculty and staff members’ rights and responsibilities toward meeting these responsibilities, as well as discuss Disabilities Services policies and procedures.  Finally, we will examine several case studies to put our new knowledge into practice.  Please bring your questions!

W-6. Periclean Scholars Interest Session (10:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.)

This meeting is for all faculty and staff interested in learning about the Periclean Scholars program in general and in particular about the role of the Class Mentor.  There will be a short presentation about the history of the program with a special focus on how various faculty have uniquely embraced the personal and professional challenges involved in Mentoring a Class of Periclean Scholars.  Questions and discussion will be encouraged.

W-9  Writing Excellence Initiative Orientation for Departments Starting Fall 2015 (12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.)

Location: Belk Pavilion 208

This is the only required orientation for departments starting the Writing Excellence Initiative this year. We will review the WEI process and timeline, share writing outcomes and other materials from departments that have already begun the process, discuss assessment possibilities, explain resources available to assist departments and faculty leads (such as WEI grants and Writing Center Fellows), answer questions, and ask for feedback on ways the Center for Writing Excellence may support departments/faculty in their WEI work. Lunch will be served, so please RSVP to Rachel Branson by  August 10th  (rbranson2@elon.edu).  

Intended Audience: Chairs of departments beginning their WEI work this year and faculty selected to take leadership roles within the department.

This four-hour program, offered by the Office of Inclusive Community Well-Being and certified Anti-Defamation League Facilitators, will help anyone who wants to interact more positively and productively with their students and colleagues from a variety of backgrounds in the classroom and across campus.  Participants will explore a deeper understanding of others' experiences and develop communication skills to use in the office, classroom and campus community when it comes to navigating difference and celebrating diversity.

Intended Audience: Elon staff and faculty who have not already attended an "ADL, A Campus of Difference" program
