The Underground Railroad

Voices From Within the 'Peculiar Institution'

The Underground Railroad is the secret system of safe houses and abolitionists who aided fugitive slaves in their journey north in the 19th century. This program will provide students with the opportunity to revisit the efforts of railroad "conductors" who assisted slaves as they made the dangerous trek to freedom. Students will also be confronted with the question, "What is our current moral and social responsibility to assist under-represented individuals and groups?"

The Underground Railroad program launches in May 2010. Join us as we revisit the spirit and courage of those who defied bigotry, segregation and racism with courageous determination. The tour will wind through North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
