Elon prepares to take on James Madison for CAA football title

The Elon Phoenix will host top-ranked James Madison University at Rhodes Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 18, at noon, with selections for the NCAA FCS playoffs to take place on Sunday. Want to attend a playoff game? Find more information here.

At noon on Saturday at Rhodes Stadium, the 11th-rated Elon University football team will play host to top-ranked James Madison in a contest that will decide the CAA Football champion. Prior to the game, Elon will honor 10 players in a Senior Day ceremony.

Elon will recognize 10 players of part of pregame Senior Day ceremonies – offensive lineman Graham Albright, defensive lineman Josh Armstrong, defensive back Chris Blair, defensive back Malcolm Galloway, defensive lineman Nick Groll, defensive lineman Dondre Howell, linebacker Johnathan Jackson, defensive back Jack Landry, wide receiver Tre Lennon and offensive lineman Ikenna Nwokeji

Fans can watch the game for free on Phoenix All-Access. Phoenix faithful can also listen to the game on WSJS 104.5 FM and 1200 AM as well as at elonphoenix.com as Taylor Durham and Dan Wyar will call the action. The pregame radio coverage will begin at 11 a.m. Tickets can be purchased online here.

With a victory on Saturday, the Phoenix (8-2, 6-1) would clinch a share of the 2017 CAA title as the maroon and gold tied would be tied with the Dukes (10-0, 7-0). A win by the Stony Brook Seawolves (8-2, 6-1) over Maine could create a three-way tie at the top of the conference standings. In the event of a three-way tie, league tie-breaking regulations would award the automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs to James Madison. Elon would claim the automatic bid with a win over JMU and a Stony Brook loss.

In preparation for a potential playoff bid, Elon Athletics has announced information regarding tickets, dates, parking and ticket office hours. The 24-team field for the 2017 NCAA FCS playoffs will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. during a live selection show on ESPNU.

How are teams selected?
The NCAA FCS Championship is a 24-team playoff. A total of 10 programs receive an automatic qualification by winning a conference championship, while 14 teams earn at-large selections. The NCAA looks at records, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, trends and several other factors in evaluating an overall resume. First-round team pairings are determined according to geographical proximity. Teams from the same conference will not be paired for first-round games or for second-round games when both teams are playing their first games of the championship (except for teams from the same conference that did not play against each other during the regular season; such teams may play each other in the first and second round).

What are the playoff dates?

The top eight teams in the field receive seeds and a first-round bye for the playoffs. The other 16 teams play first-round games on Nov. 25. The winners play at the eight seeded teams on Dec. 2. The quarterfinals are held either Dec. 8 or 9 and the semifinals either Dec. 15 or 16. The NCAA Division I national championship game is scheduled for Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas. With the exception of the national title game, all games are played at campus sites.
