Ruelle and Felten co-author chapter on diverse approaches to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in academic libraries

Assistant Provost Peter Felten and Dean Joan Ruelle collaborate on an essay about the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) as professional development in academic libraries.

Peter Felten, assistant provost for teaching and learning and executive director of the Center for Engaged Learning, and Joan Ruelle, dean of the Carol Grotnes Belk Library, partnered with Margy MacMillan, senior researcher at Project Information Literacy, to write a chapter of the new book, “The Grounded Instruction Librarian: Participating in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.”

The book discusses the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning from four perspectives: pedagogy, theory, research, and professional development; each discussion opens with a foundational chapter that offers questions, theories and literature to introduce the chapters that follow.

Felten, Ruelle and MacMillan’s chapter, “SoTL Difference: The Value of Incorporating SoTL into Librarian Professional Development” is the foundational chapter for the section on professional development. The book is published by the Association of College and Research Libraries and is available to read as an Open Access resource at https://mruir.mtroyal.ca/xmlui/handle/11205/437.
