Kelli Shuman to head Office of Human Resources

Shuman will join Elon as associate vice president for human resources and chief human resources officer.  

Kelli Shuman has been named associate vice president for human resources and chief human resources officer at Elon University following a national search. She will begin her work at Elon on Oct. 15.

Shuman has nearly 15 years of experience in higher education human resources and comes to Elon after serving as vice president for human resources at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City, South Dakota. She earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration and human resource management from Black Hills State University and a master’s degree in administration—human resource management from the University of South Dakota.

Shuman joined the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in 2005 as a human resources generalist involved in the day-to-day operations of the office, and advanced within the school’s Human Resources Office to become director of human resources in 2011 and vice president of human resources in 2014.

As director and then vice president, Shuman reported to the institution’s president and was responsible for all aspects of human resources including employee relations, performance management, recruitment, compensation, training and development, and benefits. In addition to her duties as vice president, she also held the role of Title IX coordinator, leading development of several outreach and education initiatives focused around sexual assault response and bystander intervention. Among her accomplishments was the development of the SD Mines Leadership Academy, a yearlong leadership program that fosters professional development within the school. She has also led several implementations of human resources technology, including two versions of the recruitment and position management software, PeopleAdmin, and a total human resources information system conversion to Ellucian Banner Human Resources.

Shuman is an at-large national board member of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources and previously served as a board member for the association’s Midwest region. She’s a 2014 graduate of the Institute for Educational Management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
