Thirteen Elon chemistry students presented their undergraduate research results Nov. 15-17, 2012, at the Southeastern Regional Meeting of the American Chemistry Society in Raleigh, N.C.
Three students were honored with awards for their presentations.
Rachel E. Wilson was recognized with an award for a best oral presentation. Her presentation, “Uncovering the link between Bcl-2 proteins and chemoresistance”, reported on research carried out under the direction of Assistant Professor Victoria Moore.
Kelsey M. Van Dalfsen was recognized with a Sigma Xi award for a best group oral presentation. Her presentation, “BCL-2 protein regulation of apoptosis in diabetic cardiomyopathy”, reported on research also carried out under the direction of Moore.
Cecilia L. Smith was recognized with an award for a runner-up oral presentation. Her presentation, “Determination of explosives in aqueous solution using electrochemiluminescence quenching”, reported on research carried out under the direction of Professor Karl Sienerth.
Also presenting their Elon research at the conference were Robert E Rawlings (Mentor: Associate Professor Joel Karty), Kevin Lynch (Karty), Jo A. Crum (Moore), Alex Helman (Associate Professor Kathryn Matera), Kathryn Knaus (Matera), Andrew Fischer (Matera), Russell B. Davidson (Sienerth), Mark Dalgetty (Matera), Mary Bedard (Moore and Sienerth), and Michael J. Norris (Karty).
Smith and Davidson also presented REU research conducted during the summer at Southern Illinois University and University of Bristol, United Kingdom, respectively.
