Elon phoenix families Winter 2017

Winter Term 2017


Students were all around the globe this winter term! More than 800 students, faculty and staff participated this month in 35 programs on six continents. Their experiences ranged from visiting a tobacco auction warehouse in Malawi to studying film in Australia and New Zealand.

Commencement 2017

Elon University’s 127th Commencement will be held May 20, 2017. Elon's Commencement website will be updated throughout spring semester with a schedule of events, rain plan information and other notifications.

Members of the Class of 2017 can pick up their bachelor's robe during the Graduation Fair Feb. 28–March 1 at the Barnes & Noble campus bookstore on Williamson Avenue. Commencement merchandise including announcements, diploma frames, rings and more will be available. In addition, Lifetouch Photography will take senior portraits for purchase and to appear in Elon's yearbook, Phi Psi Cli.
 
Student involvement

Elon students are encouraged to explore opportunities outside of the classroom to supplement their learning and development inside of the classroom. Through the Office of Student Involvement, students are exposed to Elon’s 250+ clubs and organizations. Students can learn more about campus involvement opportunities by visiting PhoenixCONNECT, meeting with the CONNECTions Team (Moseley 120), and attending the Spring Organization Fair on Feb. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Moseley Student Center. 
 
Elon Volunteers! is hiring

For students looking for a leadership role, Elon Volunteers! (EV!) will hire over 100 positions for the 2017-18 school year. These positions serve as peer leaders in service, helping to engage other Elon students in local and global communities. Applications open Feb. 27.

In addition, EV! is sponsoring two major on-campus service opportunities: our spring blood drive April 5-6 and our spring Special Olympics field day April 21. Students can contact EV! at elonvols@elon.edu to learn how to get involved.

Student concerns

If you are concerned for a student’s health or well-being you may submit a student concerns report. This information may be used to help link a student with resources and/or respond if a student’s behavior is creating a situation that is concerning, disruptive or potentially unsafe for themselves or others. Please remember this reporting form is for non-emergency reporting only and our team members are not clinical counselors. If any person may be in danger, call 911 immediately.

Elon Dining

We can’t wait for spring semester! Elon Dining hosts monthly theme meals that transform the dining halls. During spring semester students will enjoy A Night in Paris, a luau and a throwback to the '90s. Weekly Sustainability and Health and Wellness events will educate students on how to take care of themselves as well as the Earth. Housing selection process

The selection process for students to choose their fall 2017 housing began earlier this month. Housing reservation fees and agreements need to be paid and completed by Feb. 20. Residence Life will host two online chat sessions for parents and families on Feb. 13 and Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. EDT. Details on the online chat sessions will be shared via email in February.

Planning for spring semester final exams

Exams for spring semester are more than three months away, but proper final exam preparation is important for student success this spring. Be sure that you are aware of the final examination schedule (click on "Exam Schedules" for a complete list of times and dates) and policies for travel and planning purposes.

Graduate level courses available to undergraduate students

Undergraduate students who meet the necessary requirements are eligible to enroll in graduate level courses for undergraduate degree credit. Credit earned in this way will count toward an undergraduate degree and may count toward a graduate degree should the student transition to graduate study at Elon University. Free peer tutoring

Peer tutoring is offered free of charge to all enrolled Elon University students for their Elon classes. High demand subjects including accounting, computer science, economics, calculus, statistics and physics are tutored ONLY on a walk-in basis. The walk-in tutor schedule is available online. All other subjects are tutored on a by-appointment basis. Students can request help by emailing the tutor directly for an appointment. By-appointment tutor contact information is published on the tutoring website.
 
Career planning advice

In December, seniors received an email from the Student Professional Development Center providing career planning advice about internships, full-time employment and graduate school. Please review the email with your student and encourage them to take advantage of these opportunities.
 
Phoenix on the road

Join the Phoenix basketball programs on the road this season as they travel to take on Colonial Athletic Association opponents. Prior to select CAA road games, the Phoenix Club will host pre-game socials for Elon alumni, parents and friends. Check our event page for more information.
