The Heart of an Elon Education

2024-25 Annual Report

As I reflect upon my first year as the dean of College, the College of Arts and Sciences, I remain truly amazed by our exceptional faculty who have an unwavering commitment to student success, innovative teaching, and impactful scholarship or creative work. In addition, our staff go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that facilities and operations are working smoothly. Much of what I am referring to here, from high-quality faculty and highly engaged staff—remains invisible to some. I have come to learn that such dispositions and outcomes are baked in our mission.

This year, we welcomed new faculty and staff whose energy and expertise will continue to advance our mission:

Inspired by intellectual curiosity, passion, and integrity, we champion disciplinary knowledge and interdisciplinary applications to reflect upon, respond to and offer solutions to critical problems in a complex and changing world.

We will be taking a closer look at the mission this upcoming year, but I am hopeful that the very essence, meaning and spirit of the words remain.

Founded in the year 2000, as part of a university-wide academic reorganization that affirmed the central role of the liberal arts and sciences, Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences, remains the heart and soul of the university. While it is an honor to serve as your dean, it is also a privilege to work with faculty and staff who give so much every day to our students and the larger university.

Sincerely,

Hilton Kelly
Dean of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences

Leading the Way

Hilton Kelly served his first year as the dean in Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences in 2024-25. He spent much of the fall on a “listening tour,” meeting with the College’s 21 departments. These sessions enabled him to gauge climate and culture in individual programs, listen to concerns and begin to set a vision for continuous improvement.

Kelly earned his Ph.D. in sociology and a Master of Science in labor studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and his Bachelor of Arts in history at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Senior Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Social Justice Angela Lewellyn works in the dean’s office managing academic administration and operations.

Associate Dean and Professor of Exercise Science Caroline Ketcham oversees science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

This spring, Associate Professor of Psychology David Buck was selected as a new associate dean to oversee humanities, social sciences and interdisciplinary programs. Buck previously served as department chair for the Department of Psychology since 2021, following an interim appointment in Fall 2019. In addition to his teaching and departmental work, Buck served on the Promotion and Tenure Committee, the Social Sciences Division Curriculum Committee, and on the new Faculty Position Request Committee.
