Enhancing Business with Cybersecurity

This minor addresses the growing global need for cybersecurity expertise, highlighted by a 12.6% increase in demand for professionals in 2023, with an estimated 4 million additional workers needed. Approximately 67% of organizations, particularly in education and government, report a shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals.

The Cybersecurity Management minor recognizes the growing importance of certifications in the cybersecurity field. In 2022, 90% of industry leaders showed a preference for hiring individuals with certifications. Pursuing this minor not only equips you with critical knowledge at the intersection of digital security and business strategy but also leads to obtaining IBM’s Security Practitioner Certificate.

Offering a unique blend of knowledge, this minor focuses on the intersection of digital security and business strategy. Students engage with complex, real-world cybersecurity issues, honing their ability to think critically and devise effective solutions.

The curriculum provides a comprehensive learning experience, from theoretical foundations to hands-on practice, ensuring students are well-versed in the nuances of cybersecurity management.

Whether the goal is to pursue a career in cybersecurity consulting, to influence public policy, or to lay a strong foundation for graduate studies, this program is designed to build a comprehensive skill set.

Classes in Cybersecurity Management are open to all students; however, students majoring in Business Analytics may not declare a minor in Cybersecurity Management. While Business Analytics majors are not eligible to declare the Cybersecurity Management minor, all students who partake in specific courses within the curriculum will have the opportunity to a Security Practitioner Certificate.

Minor Requirements

To complete this minor, students would need to complete 20 hours of coursework comprised of the following classes:

  • BUS 2110 – Management Information Systems
  • MGT 3100 – Foundations of Business Analytics
  • MGT 3350 – Principles of Cybersecurity Management
  • MGT 4350 – Advanced Cybersecurity Management Techniques

In addition, students would need to take one of the following two classes:

  • MGT 4110 – Data Wrangling
  • ENT 3440 – Tech Tools for Innovation

While students can complete these classes with many various schedules, the recommended class plan would be:

First Year (Spring) BUS 2110/Management Information Systems
Sophomore Year (Fall) MGT 3100/Foundations of Business Analytics
Sophomore Year (Spring) MGT 4110/Data Wrangling or ENT 3440/Tech Tools for Innovation
Senior Year (Fall) MGT 3350/Principles of Cybersecurity Management
