About the Society

The Sport Management Society is a student-run organization that allows Sport Management (SPT) majors and minors to connect and network with fellow students, professors and industry professionals, and to put to use what they are learning in the classroom into practice through planning and participating in many different types of events. Whether the organization is hosting its own event, coordinating an event with another area organization, or attending a local game as a social event, you’re bound to have a great time, walk away learning something new, or meet someone you didn’t know beforehand.

Mission Statement

To provide opportunities for students to build broader knowledge of the sport industry, specific career goals, and relationships that will last beyond Elon.

Sport Management Society Experiences

The Sport Management Society, in conjunction with the Sport Management Department, has many great resources available for students. Elon University is centrally located in North Carolina, making it convenient to connect with other universities and colleges as well as successful sport businesses and organizations in the surrounding area. Our network begins with our professors, program alumni and current students then expands through their many connections throughout the sport industry.

Annual Events

Internship Forum

As a part of the SPT major, students are required to complete a 400-hour internship in the sport management industry. The Internship Forum, hosted in conjunction with the department, showcases what current seniors have done for their internship requirements. This event allows other students to learn about those opportunities, ask questions and network with seniors as they prepare to apply for internships or jobs of their own. This is always a great event, which takes place every fall semester, and truly showcases the amazing opportunities for and accomplishments of the students in our program.

Speaker Forum with Carolina Hurricanes Executive Staff

This event was both a social outing and a great professional development event. The evening began with an opportunity to tour the facility before an NHL game, and then hear from senior level executives of the Carolina Hurricanes and PNC Arena. Topics ranged from advice for students looking to break into the industry to the day-to-day roles of people in different areas of the organization, including ownership, ticketing, operations and marketing.

Sport Management Panel Picture

Sport Management Symposium

During this annual event, sport industry professionals from across the country participate in panels about their experiences in the sport industry and networked with students in attendance. We hosted representatives from the following organizations: National Basketball Association, New York Yankees, Durham Bulls, NASCAR, Spire Sport and Entertainment, Philadelphia Phillies, USA Baseball, Athletic Coast Conference, ESPN, Duke Athletics, IMG College, Burlington Royals, Carolina Hurricanes and Danville Braves. This was an engaging event where students were able to learn from professionals as well as expand their network.
