Clear Bag Policy

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience please review the clear bag policy for Elon University Commencement Ceremonies. Elon continues to encourage guests not to bring any bags for safety, efficiency and convenience at guest entrances and candidate check-in.

Permitted Items

The following items will be permitted into Elon University events, but will be inspected at bag check locations prior to entry:

  • Any clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag no larger than 12″ x 6″ x 12″
  • Any clear plastic freezer bag 1 gallon or smaller
  • Small purses or clutch bags no larger than 6.5″ x 4.5″ (approximately the size of a hand) with or without a handle or strap can be taken inside in addition to one of the clear plastic bags
  • Exceptions are typically granted for medically necessary items after proper inspection

Prohibited Items

The following items and activities are prohibited out of concern for the safety of our guests, employees and participants:

  • Alcohol
  • Artificial noisemakers
  • Balloon displays
  • Bags (Only clear bags and small purses or clutch bags are permitted)
  • Beach balls
  • Bicycles/Footwear with wheels/Hoverboards/Skateboards
  • Chairs or collapsible chairs
  • Coolers/Ice Bags
  • Drones/Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Including in surrounding parking lots controlled by Elon University
  • Food or drinks brought in from outside (Sealed water bottles or empty reusable water bottles permitted)
  • Illegal substances
  • Laser pointers
  • Pets are not permitted in Schar Center. Service animals specifically trained to aid a person with a disability are welcome.
  • Poles/sticks for flags/signs/glow sticks
  • Selfie sticks
  • Signs/banners/flags on poles/whistles
  • Large, non-collapsible stroller (collapsible strollers are permitted)
  • Tobacco products of any kind, e-cigarettes
  • Umbrellas (no storage of items available at gates)
  • Video cameras and GoPros (hand-held still-cameras are permitted)
  • Weapons, firearms, explosives
  • Wrapped gifts

*Exceptions will be made for those with medical requirements or special needs; guests and candidates should carry any necessary documentation, credentials or identification.

*Diaper bags are permitted only if accompanied by an infant.

All persons and belongings are subject to search. Guests must return unauthorized items to their vehicles. Elon University cannot safeguard items not permitted inside the venue. Prohibited items in the venue will be confiscated and not returned.

Guests in violation of policies are subject to removal from the venue, arrest, and prosecution under applicable laws and statutes. Students or candidates who violate rules may also be subject to disciplinary procedures through the University’s Office of Student Conduct.
