Brief Biography

Janna Anderson is co-founder and senior researcher at Elon University's Imagining the Digital Future Center. Recent publications include "Being Human in the Age of AI," "The Impact of AI by 2040," “The Metaverse in 2040" and "The Future of Human Agency." She is also a full professor and director of the Imagining the Internet Center at Elon University and served for 20 years as a senior contract researcher for Pew Research, co-leading Pew and Elon’s 23-year series of reports outlining thousands of experts’ predictions for the most likely future of digital life in coming decades. She is the lead author of the "Future of the Internet" book series published by Cambria Press and author of the book "Imagining the Internet: Personalities, Predictions, Perspectives." She has appeared as a speaker and expert on the future of information technologies at numerous international conferences, including World Future conferences, South By Southwest Interactive, Webcom, NextGov, MobilityShifts, Institute for the Future symposiums, the UN-facilitated Internet Governance Forum and the Metaverse Roadmap Project. 

Longer bio: Janna Anderson is co-founder and senior researcher at Elon University's Imagining the Digital Future Center, which evolved out of an earlier digital futures research site that got its start in 2000: the Imagining the Internet Center, an international communications research unit that published the website "Imagining the Internet: A History and Forecast." The site is a massive archive of people's predictions about the future of the Internet from the early 1990s through 2023. It is a Webby Awards Honoree. She previously also served as a senior contract researcher with the Pew Research Center's Internet and Technology Project for nearly 20 years. She has investigated the future of more than 50 Internet-related topics since 2000. She is frequently quoted in media reports and sought out by those in government and business to share her expertise. She has been active in the processes of the UN-facilitated Internet Governance Forum and World Summit on the Information Society. She is the lead author of the "Future of the Internet" book series published by Cambria Press and the book "Imagining the Internet" (Rowman & Littlefield, 2005), designated as a 2006 American Library Association "Choice" book - a must-have book for library reference collections. Her expertise is concentrated in: emerging media; the future of the Internet and communications; Internet history; futures studies; and journalism. She has appeared as a speaker and participant in numerous international conferences on the future of information technologies, including the World Future conference, South By Southwest Interactive, Webcom, NextGov, MobilityShifts, Institute for the Future symposiums, the UN-facilitated Internet Governance Forum and the Metaverse Roadmap Project, investigating the future of social networks and the 3D Internet. She has also served as a contributor to the "State of the Future" reports published by the Millennium Project. She was on the steering committee of the WWW2010 international conference and directed the co-located FutureWeb conference, which featured Vint Cerf, Tim Berners-Lee, danah boyd and Doc Searls. An award-winning professor of emerging media and digital journalism, she is known for 25 years of excellence in teaching and research at Elon, the university U.S. News & World Report has ranked #1 in teaching among all U.S. National universities for five consecutive years. She has been nationally recognized as a Scripps-AEJMC U.S. Teacher of the Year top-three finalist; has been nominated twice for Carnegie U.S. Professor of Year; was awarded AEJMC News Division U.S. Professor of the Year; and was honored with the Daniels-Daniely Award - Elon University’s top teaching honor. She has served as a judge for the Webby Awards and as a reviewer for New Media & Society and Newspaper Research Journal and as a reviewer of NSF grant applications. She enjoyed a 20-year career as an award-winning professional journalist prior to joining the faculty at Elon in 1999 and beginning her research and teaching career.

Imagining the Internet: A History and Forecast, a project of the Imagining the Internet Center, an initiative of Elon University’s School of Communications, is an online documentation of the evolution of the Internet that includes more than 6,500 pages of data. It is being archived by the U.S. Library of Congress Web Archive, and is considered a primary source describing the evolution of communications. It is a featured Internet Society “history” site. It is a permanent link on the Pew Internet & American Life site; PDF files of Future of the Internet studies have been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times by global communications policymakers, futurists, researchers, consultants, and the general public. The site has been featured in articles by the BBC, Le Monde, the New York Times, and hundreds of other regional and international news publications across the globe.
