Whitley Auditorium reopens after $1 million renovation

Elon College, NC– One of the most historic buildings on the Elon College campus reopened Sept. 21 after a $1 million renovation project. Whitley Auditorium, Elon’s classic performance hall which was built in 1923, received a variety of upgrades during the nine-month project.

The restoration includes a new lobby with three crystal chandeliers, spacious restrooms, new seaing, a sound system and a new heating and air conditioning system. Next spring, a Casavant Pipe Organ will be installed in the auditorium. Faculty offices also received an upgrade as part of the renovation project. The project was designed by the architectural firm of Eason and Farlow. Keck Company, Inc., served as general contractor.

While updating the facility with modern conveniences was an important part of the project, the plan was also mindful of Whitleys historic character, says Gerald Whittington, vice president for business and finance.

“Even when you introduce modern requirements for a space, such as air conditioning, new seating, access for disabled persons and new bathrooms, it was critical to preserve Whitley Auditorium’s elegant architectral detail. We believe that we have enhanced the space with what we have done and kept the look true to its history,” says Whittington.

Whitley’s 382 seats offer an intimate setting for a variety of events, including concerts, lectures and weekly chapel services.

The auditorium was used for the first time in 1924, when it hosted commencement exercises.
