Network television correspondent to deliver commencement address

Mike Jensen, chief financial correspondent for NBC television, will deliver the commencement address at Elon Saturday, May 19.

Jensen has covered many important stories during his career. With a reputation for making finance and business easy to understand, Jensen has won acclaim for his coverage of stories ranging from the energy crisis of the 1970s to corporate downsizing in the 1990s. He received a Media Award for Economic Understanding for his NBC Nightly News special segment titled, “Killer Inflation.” He is the winner of two Janus Awards for excellence in broadcast journalism concerning economic issues.

Jensen’s versatility is evident in his investigative reporting, human interest features, and special broadcasts and documentaries. He earned a National News Emmy Award for his coverage of the 1994 Midwest floods, and his one-on-one interview subjects have included Bill Clinton, Alan Greenspan and Mick Jagger. He has also covered significant international stories, including the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of communism in Russia and Poland.

Jensen came to NBC from The New York Times, where he had been a financial reporter and editor. He began his news career at The Boston Herald-Traveler as a reporter and executive financial editor. He has also contributed articles to The Harvard Business Review and The Saturday Review. His non-fiction book, “The Financiers,” took a skeptical look at the great Wall Street investment banking houses.

The May 19 commencement exercises will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the historic area under the oaks in front of West Residence Hall.
