Basirico named dean of international programs

Larry Basirico, a member of the sociology faculty since 1983 and most recently interim dean of international programs, has been named to the post on a permanent basis, effective immediately.

Basirico has extensive experience in leading study abroad programs. He has served as chair of the sociology and anthropology department, in addition to chairing Elon’s curriculum committee.

He was named interim dean of international program in summer 2004 following the retirement of Bill Rich as dean.

His is a noted expert in the study of family reunions. His latest book, “The Family Reunion Survival Guide,” offers practical advice for planning family reunions and avoiding conflicts. He has been quoted in stories on the topic in various publications, including The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times and the Arizona Republic.

He is an active scholar who has published two recent papers on international education and study abroad. He presented “The Evolution of an International Education Program: Critical Elements for Success Leading to a High Growth Program” at the Inter 2005 Conference at Herstmonceaux Castle in East Sussex, England. Basirico also wrote, with Elon colleague Monica Pagano, “Incorporating Study Abroad into the Academic Curriculum,” which was presented at the Region VII NAFSA annual meeting in Myrtle Beach, SC, in 2004.
