Student Is Finalist in National Writing Competition

Irene Harvley-Felder (’05) was a finalist in a nonfiction contest sponsored by Fourth Genre, the preeminent journal in nonfiction. The competition in the contest was extremely stiff: 1st prize went to the Chair of the English Department at the University of Nebraska and 2nd prize to a faculty member at Kansas State. Irene finished ahead of the Director of Creative Writing at Georgia College and State University. Quite a remarkable achievement!

Her winning essay, “The Advancing Light,” about her experiences teaching in Turkey in the summer of 2004, was written in her senior seminar in creative writing and was published in COLONNADES 2005.
