Update on Elon relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina victims–Sept. 6

All Elon University Hurricane Katrina relief efforts are posted at http://www.elon.edu/e-web/news/e-net/katrina. All monies collected are donated to the American Red Cross and Salvation Army programs specifically for those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

NEW/UPCOMING ACTIVITIES

1) Panel on Impact of Katrina: 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 8, Yeager Recital Hall, Center for the Arts

A panel will discuss the affects of Hurricane Katrina on the cultural, economic, andenvironmental diversity of the Gulf Coast region and the short and long term implications of this natural disaster for the region and the country.

Panelists along with their department and role on the panel:

  • Jessica Gisclair, communications, moderator/overview of Gulf Coast and its cultural diversity, history and economics
  • Janet MacFall, environmental studies, power and destruction of hurricanes, environmental impact on wetlands and Gulf Coast
  • Jim Barbour, economics, impact on Gulf Coast and national economy
  • Connie Book, communications, media coverage of disaster, communications systems
  • Kirbi Hawkins, new Elon student, personal experience of her evacuation/displacement from her home institution, Tulane University.

2. Personal Reflections of Elon community members affected by Katrina: led by Chaplain McBride, 2:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 9, Isabella Cannon Room, Center for the Arts

3. A Mardi Gras Party at College Coffee: Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 9:50 a.m.

A swing band, King Cake silent audition, Élan cd sale, and bake goods sale- cakes, bread, cookies, brownies, cheesecakes, etc.- with proceeds going to the relief effort, with decorations by the Delta Delta Delta sorority. Wear your Mardi Gras jewelry, crows and masks. Contact Linda Martindale at martinda@elon.edu if you would like to contribute a baked good for sale.

4. Service Learning Community Car Washes: Saturday, Sept. 10 at First State Bank at the Carolina Mall and on Sunday, Sept. 11 at the Mid-Carolina Bank at Church Street and Forestdale. All proceeds go to Katrina relief.

DONATION OPTIONS:

1. Donations may be made online at http://www.elon.edu/e-web/news/e-net/katrina/.

2. Phoenix Cash at the Phoenix Card Office in the Moseley Center at any time during business hours.

3. Collection Tables in the Moseley Center: Cash (or Phoenix Cash) donations will be collected by students at tables in the Moseley Campus Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, Sept. 5-16. For each donation of $1, a strand of Mardi Gras beads will be given. Those who donate are requested to wear these beads in honor of those affected by Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast areas.

4. Collection bins: These are in the Campus Shop, Octagon, Acorn, Varsity, Harden, McEwen and the Daniel Commons dining halls.

5. Students, faculty, staff, alumni or parents may donate cash or send checks to the Office of the Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students, Alamance 109, 2188 Campus Box. Please note: Since we are collecting these funds on behalf of other entities, these donations are not tax deductible gifts to the University. However, if you would like to make a tax deductible donation to the American Red Cross or Salvation Army, please make the check payable to the agency and send to the Office of the Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students at the address above. We will be glad to include it when we send the fundraising donations to these agencies.
